Whats the problem with eWaste?
e-waste is consumer and business electronic and electric kit that is near or past its useful life. Typically computers, televisions, microwaves, cell phones, DVDs, stereos, photocopiers, fax machines, batteries, printers and cartridges
It’s a world wide problem, sales of electronic products is rising. Technical obsolescence is increasing. How to handle growing e-waste has become a major problem. It’s a big challenge for governments, manufacturers and us.
The volumes are enormous and rising. Estimates for Australia from just computers are between 7,000 and 8,000 tonnes ANNUALLY.
Whats in it is scary. Modern electric kit, is often made up of hundreds of different chemicals and materials. Many form hazardous waste. Lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic are used in electronic kit, toxic materials are found in printer cartridges. Over time the poison will get into the water table, from there plants, animals, food and us. It is poisoning our future.
Thankfully the Government is moving to implement takeback schemes. But before takeback, consider regifting, sell on eBay etc or at least find a recycle centre on the web check Choice magazine.
